Martin Standen

Martin went to school at Peter Symonds in Winchester, studying Law at University College London. Acting for a broad range of clients - from large institutions and companies to smaller investors and individuals - he has bought, sold and "managed" shopping centres, industrial and retail estates and multi-occupied office blocks. He is just as at home acting on smaller property transactions, including residential.
Primarily regarded as a commercial property lawyer, he is nonetheless comfortable in property litigation - including acting in the Court of Appeal for a supermarket "ambushed" on property related issues by a competitor, as a means of stifling competition. His most memorable case started one afternoon with a request for a second opinion on a landlord and tenant issue and ended (via a defeat in the Court of Appeal) with a 6 - 0 victory for his client in the House of Lords (Graysim Holdings Ltd v P&O Property Holdings Ltd [1996] 1 AC 329). His practical and analytical approach to problem solving reflects his view that legal problems require, alongside legal knowledge, common sense and imagination.
He is married with two children and has a passion for books - especially his collection of the works of Alexandre Dumas. He also has a Coastal Skipper certificate but says he needs more practical experience before being let loose on the High Seas.
